NEW: Winter weather is coming... maybe not in the way you expect..
Recent model runs continue to show potential for another round of winter weather early next week, but the placement and intensity of the snow remain uncertain. Both the GFS and ECMWF models are showing different ideas about where the heaviest snow may develop.
The ECMWF keeps the focus near Lake Michigan, where lake effect snow could become a key player as colder air flows over the warmer lake waters. This scenario would favor heavier, more localized snow bands setting up in western Michigan.
The GFS, however, paints a different picture one where snow is more widespread across the southern Lower Peninsula, northern Lower Peninsula, and the Upper Peninsula, while areas right along Lake Michigan see somewhat lighter totals.
At this point, forecast confidence is moderate to low given the model differences. Both models have been known to overestimate or underestimate snowfall early in the season, especially when lake temperatures and wind direction are changing quickly.
We’ll continue monitoring trends closely as new data comes in. Expect a more detailed forecast in the next couple of days once the models begin to align and we get a clearer picture of the setup.
